I also made the decision not to see the movie, I just knew it would be too emotional for me and I hate to go to the movies and cry. I hope and pray that the horses that made the movie were unharmed both physically and emotionally.

Thank you for your thoughts on this movie Friends and I already decided not to see the movie because we all felt it would be too graphic. War is horrible for all concerned and the use of the animals cruel. Friends post recently "God made women to protect His horses from men"

  • You're welcome

I'm glad I can help change minds about seeing War Horse. For whatever reason, the uncomfortable parts of the movie stayed with me long after the enriching parts.

I think this movie is terribly misrepresented. It draws you in with the pretense that the horse and boy have a very special love and long lasting connection. In reality, it is about the butality and complete disreguard for horses by all but a few, especially during war. That is not something I want to be reminded of and especially while enjoying a rare evening out! I did not think it was well made and Steven Spielberg should be embarrassed!

I was anxious to go and see this movie...in fact, it is in my city right now....and what attracted me most was the relationship between the boy and his horse. However, I am glad to have read Nancy's words, and I now know that I will not be seeing the movie. Without even going, I KNOW that I will not enjoy it. I am attempting to stay away from movies, t.v. programs and books that portray violence. It is a life choice that I am making to not give my energy to anything violent. Thank you Nancy, and to those who took the time to write.

Thanks for your comments. Marya emailed me that she read the horse in the wire was mechanical. I hope that's true. i was just a little too graphic for me. I worried when they made the Horse Whisperer about how they would film the accident. But, I felt it was very well done.

I haven't seen the film and not sure I really want to. Spielberg made a special announcement about how he personally saw to it that the horses weren't harmed during the film, but I wonder what that really means after reading your story of this poor mare. What we humans see as not harmful may be very harmful indeed. I don't want to see a movie where I have to hide my eyes from what is going on in it. The images, esp. where animals are concerned, stay with me long after the film is over. Thank you for this insightful article.

I was unhappy about this movie because they changed so much of the original story!! Some of the most disturbing scenes in the film never occurred in the book! I did read however that the actual "wire" used to make the film was supposedly made of rubber. I really hope that was true. Maybe things have changed for equine actors?
