Elizabeth Farms is a Christmas tree farm nestled in the heart of Amish country. Rather than solo riding for the individual, those who come to select and cut their own trees are treated to a horse drawn cart ride for the entire experience. It is something everyone in the family can enjoy, from the smallest of tikes to grandparents. Everything is included in the cost of your tree, and the trees are charged by the foot. I did speak with the gentleman whose specific job was to take care of the horses and his love for the animals and dedication to his work was quite evident.
You get to select your own tree to trim from over 200 acres of fresh smelling pines all grouped by species. Beginning your ride near where you park your car, the team of two draw horses (and driver) takes you around that part of the farm where your specific species lives. The draw horses are not the majestic Clydesdales, but they are just as proud of their work. Always on the very best of behavior, the horses are loaned to Elizabeth Farms each season by the generous Amish farmers who live nearby. When the horses get too old to pull the carts, they officially retire to pasture, gently grazing and sharing stories with each other over a bucket of oats.
When you begin your trek, you are loaned a handsaw with which you will cut your tree. The tree is loaded on the wagon and everyone heads back to the barn area. Your tree is shook clean and neatly wrapped so you can attach it to the roof of your car. You are also treated to your choice of a cup of steaming coffee, rich hot chocolate or aromatic hot cider. I had a tough time choosing!
After our tree was loaded, I couldn’t help but browse through the Gift Shop which occupies the stone level of the hill barn. This is not your typical gift shop by far. There is everything imaginable to trim your tree from unique ornaments and lights to local hand-crafted items for trimming and gift-giving. They also feature wreaths, swags, greens, roping and tree stands. Also, for those who do not want to cut their own trees, fresh cut trees are sold.
Christmas is a time for children, and Elizabeth Farms has something for the children as well as for the whole family to enjoy. In the Christmas Fantasy Barn, kids can visit Santa’s Workshop where they can visit the busy mailroom where Santa receives your letters and the North Pole Express Train pulling into the station. There is Bloomingdale’s Holiday Window Display and the Model Train Room. There is also a free Animal Zoo and kids can have their pictures taken with Santa.
I liked making it a full day and staying for the evening Holiday Light Show. With the smell of fresh cut Christmas Trees and all the brightly-colored lights, there isn’t anything better to put you in the holiday mood.
Although I was not able to drive my own team, I do believe this trip was the beginning of a new tradition for my family and me. Pro riders as well as non-riders receive equal courtesy and treatment. It was really nice to sit back and let another expert drive me to my perfect tree!
